Have you stopped to think about God’s love? What unconditional love actually means and how extravagant God’s love is? God’s love can be hard to comprehend because we live in a world that’s bound by conditions. We operate in if-then scenarios, choosing only to give as much as we receive from others. Or we alienate ourselves from the gift of love because we’ve never been loved properly or feel as if we’re undeserving of love. Maybe your self-esteem has been damaged to the point where you look in the mirror and don’t love yourself.
The evidence of God’s love is shown throughout the Bible. Verse after verse, story after story, generation after generation. The Bible shows us how even the greatest kings stumbled, yet God’s mercy, grace, and love for His children did not void the covenant. We see God use the most unlikely people (fishermen, persecutors of Christians, tax collectors, skeptics, etc.) to spread the message of the Gospel – God’s love wrapped in flesh through Jesus Christ who came to redeem us. If you commit to studying the Word, you’ll come to know that the same God who used broken people then is the same God who is using broken people now to carry out His plans. God loves us through our good, our bad, and our ugly seasons. He loves us through our weaknesses and our pain. Even God’s discipline is an act of love. Although we don’t deserve it, God loves us beyond reason.
If you have a hard time accepting God’s love or believing that God loves you, read these scriptures aloud repeatedly until the truth takes root in you.
“The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!””
Lamentations 3:22-24 NLT
“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT
“But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy. For you bless the godly, O Lord; you surround them with your shield of love.”
Psalms 5:11-12 NLT
“See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.”
1 John 3:1 NLT
“Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.”
John 14:21 NLT
“Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.”
Ephesians 3:17-19 NLT
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”
John 3:16-17 NLT
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever.”
1 Chronicles 16:34 NLT
“For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.”
Zephaniah 3:17 NLT
“Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands.”
Deuteronomy 7:9 NLT
“My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.”
Proverbs 3:11-12 NIV
“For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken,” says the Lord, who has mercy on you.”
Isaiah 54:10 NLT
“I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference.”
Revelation 3:19 NLT
“Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”
1 John 4:7-8 NLT
“But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”
Romans 5:8 NLT
“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
John 13:34-35 NLT
“Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.”
Romans 8:35-37 NLT
“And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Romans 8:38-39 NLT
